Domaine de Pellehaut 'Ampelomeryx' Blanc 2014

South West France, France

Oozes quality and luxury right from the start, with fat, decadent flavours of exotic stone fruits, honey, butterscotch and vanilla all vying to outdo each other. One sip and you'll be hooked!

Pair with poultry or fish in rich, creamy sauces - avocado and prawn risotto, maybe.

Devoted brothers Martin and Mathieu Béraut tend this family estate, at three centuries old the longest established in the Gers, just west of Toulouse. As well as creating singular, sought-after wines, the guys make a range of Armagnacs (brandies) and also breed Blondes d'Aquitaine cattle. The brand 'Ampéloméryx' references the local, long-extinct mammal - half deer, half giraffe - whose name means 'ruminant of the vineyard'.

This premium French white wine is made from a barrel-fermented (some new wood) blend of local grapes Petit and Gros Manseng, with international varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Stylistically it is similar to a good-quality oaked white Burgundy - maybe a Meursault - but at a fraction of the price!

Alcohol: 13%
Style: Rich, oaked, full
Closure: Cork
Drink by: 2020

Liam Campbell, Irish Independent

"Very fruity scents of green and golden fruits ... peach flesh and a mineral finish. Enjoy with a creamy risotto of asparagus, peas and prawns."
