Dignité Syrah 2009

Dignité Syrah 2009

Languedoc-Roussillon

€14.99

An astonishing, movingly-good syrah that would cost double the money if it came from the Rhône - smooth, decadent and suave.

Grape Varieties: Syrah/Shiraz

Type: Red

Country: France

Alcohol: 15%

Style: Full, rich

Size: 750ml

Drink By: 2016

Intense and complex bouquet of black cherries and kirsch laced with cinnamon and freshly-crushed vanilla pods. The rich, powerful palate brims with ripe black fruits suffused with mocha, cocoa and black pepper. A plush, indulgent, sinfully-good wine!

Decant if possible and savour alongside fillet steak, venison casserole or strong cheese.

The much-seen ‘Pays d’Oc’ refers to the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France, known by the French as ‘Le Midi’. Geographically this region covers an incredibly broad swathe of vineyards from the Rhône delta in the middle of southern France, arcing all the way round to the Spanish border on the Mediterranean seaboard. Dignité's producer is Boutinot, a large, international wine business whose award-winning portfolio carries 800 wines from around the world.

Dignité is made from very old vines (fifty years) that produce low yields of just 28 hectolitres per hectare, giving super-concentrated, flavoursome juice. Ten per cent of the wine is aged in new Allier oak barrels (although oaking varies by vintage). Winemaker Eric Monnin has dedicated Dignité to his three children, Lola, Eliot and Félix.

Tasting notes for Dignité Syrah 2009

Needs decanting, preferably for an hour before drinking - opens up so much.

Deep colour (4-5 intensity), dark plum, thick tears.

Rich blackcurrant, blackberry, black plum nose, heady undertones of spice, leather, eucalyptus.

Full bodied, fruity, soft tannins, good acidity. Big black fruit and spice (pepper, cinnamon). Quite intense.

"Dignite"

Tried for first time last night. Bought from local farm shop, Blacker Hall Farm, Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Decanted into a jug for about an hour before as recommended. Absolutely delicious. Full bodied, was like a meal itself.
