Conde Villar Vinho Verde 2016

Minho, Portugal

Buy Now:

Super-refreshing stuff that's a real pick-me-up with its classic Minho tingle and tangy, tropical flavours of lime, pineapple and mango. Fruity and ripe, with a dry, clean finish.

Super party wine, aperitif or partner for whitebait fritters.

The producer here is Quinta das Arcas, founded in 1985 by Antonio Manteiro and still run by him and his family today. Like most Vinho Verdes, this is a blend of native northern Portuguese grapes Loureiro, Arinto and Trajadura (Galicia's Treixadura.) Residual sugar is about 5-6 grams per litre, but the wine's natural acidity means it tastes fairly dry.

Vinho Verde is a prolific, likable, fashionable-again wine region in NW Portugal. Specialising mostly (though not exclusively) in whites, the 'verde' (green) refers to the wines' youthfulness, and not their colour. These wines are not generally sparkling, but many do exhibit a clear 'prickle' from being bottled and shipped early - Soda Stream-style carbon dioxide isn't typically added these days! Most Vinho Verdes cannot legally be higher than 11.5% alcohol.
