Round and approachable claret, heavy on the Merlot and smooth, rich flavours. The rich, enticing nose leads on to a textbook medium-bodied palate of ripe blackcurrant, sage and fruitcake, framed by smooth, dark tannins. Classy!
Allow some air time and match with something nice and easy like beef Wellington with wild mushroom Madeira sauce.
Clos de Lilas is so named as the estate is surrounded by vast tracts of lilac flowers. Flower fan and owner Patrick Darnajou sows more then between the vines, to attract honeybees. Montagne-Saint-Émilion, in Bordeaux's 'right bank', is the largest of the Saint-Émilion 'satellites.'
Saint-Émilion and its satellites are situated on the "right bank" of Bordeaux's Gironde estuary, Merlot is dominant here, as opposed to Cabernet Sauvignon on the "left bank". Whatever the side the wines are typically blends of some combination of Merlot (Bordeaux's most-planted variety), Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, supported occasionally by Petit Verdot and Malbec. Although other styles are made, Bordeaux is really a red wine region.
