Vibrant blackberry and spice nose, with hints of smoke. The supple, broad palate is immediately impressive, with big flavours of bramble fruit, cherry and nutmeg enclosed within a fine tannic mesh. Lovely depth and harmony.

Drink with roast rib of beef with all the trimmings.

Château Puybarbe, a 33-hectare estate managed by the Orlandi family since 1952, is perched on one of the highest hills of the right bank's Côtes de Bourg appellation, in the village of Mombrier. 'Puybarbe', in fact, is the name given to one of the highest points in the locale, from which you can enjoy panoramic views of the region, and see even as far as the city of Bordeaux. The blend here is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Côtes de Bourg appellation is about 12km NW of Bordeaux city. The wines are invariably easy drinking and fun, a world away from the stuffy, aristocratic appellation of Margaux, just across the estuary. The wines offer superb value for money, especially during good years.
