Château Beaumont Haut-Médoc 2014

Bordeaux, France

Beautiful dark-ruby colour with an alluring bouquet that is immediately-recognisable as Bordeaux Cab. Scents of cassis and toasted spice waft from the glass, and the lush wash, with its rich flavours of liquorice and cherry, is balanced by savoury hints of tobacco leaf and graphite. Lingering, intricate finish. Superb!

Decant for an hour and have with minty lamb kebabs.

This well-known and popular estate in the left bank's Haut-Médoc is owned by Socétié Grands Millésimes de France, owners too of Châteaux Beychevelle and Lagrange. Since 2004, the fields have been managed sustainably, along the eco-friendly principles espoused by Terra Vitis, leading to a drastic reduction in the use of inputs.
At 114 hectares Beaumont is quite a large property, and this of course brings economies of scale that allow the wine to be sold at a very competitive price, relative to its impeccable quality. Soils are well drained, deep and gravelly, and winemaker Etienne Priou typically opts for a blend of around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, with a soupçon of Cabernet Franc and, in warmer years, Petit Verdot. Ageing is for just over a year, in new French oak, of which one-third is new.
