In 1824, aged nine, Bleasdale founder Frank Potts joined the British Royal Navy as one of its dutiful powder monkeys. So named for their agility, speed and playfulness, these young boys relayed gunpowder between magazines and gun decks during battle.

While many South Australian family wineries died with their entrepreneurial founders, Bleasdale, established in 1850, still survives proudly today.

Through the challenges of the 1930s and 1940s when Britain's Imperial Preference for Australian wine was removed; the 1950s when Australian tastes swung from fortifieds to table wine; and through the 1980s and 1990s when consumers demanded Chardonnay and Cabernet not Verdelho and Shiraz, the Potts family has changed, innovated and persisted.

Other than Yalumba it is the longest running family owned winery in Australia, a proud heritage of commitment and dedication to an industry and a region.

ALLOCATION WINE: This is an allocation wine, a wine where demand substantially exceeds availability of supply due to limited production or rarity of vintage. Rather than mark-up to reflect this rarity, we simply reserve the right to exclude this wine from headline price promotions.

Australian Wine Companion

James Halliday

Oak dominates the bouquet at first, but there is an underlying power of black fruits and graphite lurking beneath; the palate is incredibly solid and the concentration and complexity of the fruit undoubted.

Wine 100

David LeMire

Deep, rich, and soft, this wine shows the character of Langhorne Creek, with its generous mid-palate and long, even flavoured finish. The fruit shows ripe plums, some licorice, tar and a seawood/saltbush character that adds interest. Ripe, round tannins and a low-acid mouthfeel.
