Acacia Tree Pinotage 2016

Western Cape, South Africa

Buy Now:

Deep ruby-purple colour. Obvious aromas of black cherry, plum pie and smoke, with hints of Port and grilled meat. The medium-bodied palate is robustly flavoured but shows subtle tannins and a surprisingly long finish. Characterful, open and style.

Drink on its own or with chilli-glazed sticky ribs or chorizo tapas.

Pinotage is a quirky, quintessentially South African variety that was created by Professor Abraham Perold at Stellenbosch University in 1925 when he crossed two other red grapes, Cinsault and Pinot Noir - the progeny isn't really like either parent! A grape that hasn't always been easy for the Cape's winemakers to coax the best out of, they have of late been achieving much better results, helped by the ongoing research of the Pinotage Producers Association.

This Pinotage was cold-soaked for 5 days prior to fermentation so as to extract lots of colour and flavour from the grapes. The stainless steel ferment utilised yeasts specifically selected for their fruit-emphasizing properties and, after pressing, the young wine was seasoned using oak wood staves, to produce a bright, fruity, lightly-spiced red.
