Our find of the year so far?
WE TASTE A LOT OF WINES. I’m talking hundreds of wines each year, and it’s harder work than it sounds – honestly, we kiss a lot of frogs for you guys!
I will admit though, it’s not really hard work to find tasty wines that will retail for €20, €25, €30. The trick is unearthing the wines that taste like that for half the price.
INTRODUCING TAOZ. It’s only a side project for a really smart, modern and very hi-tech winery in Somontano. That’s a wine region in north-east Spain, a bit to the right of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, the real rock stars of Spanish wine. It’s not even a traditional Spanish recipe, there’s not a drop of Tempranillo in it.
It does have super-ripe, punchy Cabernet though. And soft, luxurious Merlot. And rich, spicy Syrah. And it’s aged for 14 months in a mix of American and French oak. And it’s 2011, so you’ve at least a further three years bottle ageing at someone else’s expense.
Get it the glass and BAM! We’re talking classic, top-end Rioja Reserva styling here. Dark, glossy fruit, toasty oak, cedar, vanilla, pencil shavings, coffee beans, chocolate – and that’s just on the nose. Taste it – BAM again! Masses of black fruit – blackberries, plums, cherries – big, chewy tannins, with a sweet, creamy, blueberry-laced finish.
It’s simply sensational for €12 and we think our find of the year so far.
