What’s black and white and red all over…
TAKE OLD ALSACE FAMILY ROOTS, place them in Chile’s Cachapoal Valley and throw in an Australian recipe for strapping red blends, and what do you get?
Château Los Boldos was established in the early 90s by an old Franco-Chilean family. Despite being young, the estate’s large single vineyard is clustered with old vine plots which produce super-ripe, intensely-flavoured grapes. It’s perfect Cabernet country, with the balmy, desert-like conditions offset by irrigation with readily-available Andean snow-melt. (I know, it’s like saying Cork spuds benefit from fresh Atlantic sea spray while we face force 9 winds in May but at least you know it’s as pure as, well, the driven Andean snow.)
The best grapes on the estate go into this, a serious, full-bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It’s distinctly French in style – dry, oaky and robust – so serve up with spring lamb or an early summer barbecue.
PS Did you know a zebra has white stripes, not black?
