Buying wine around the holidays is a lot of pressure – loads of us lorry in the drink without a clue what we’re doing, and generally end up picking piles of plonk off the shelf because the label looks quite alright.
Continuing our Quick Guide to Christmas Wines, here’s the straight skinny on three completely classy white wines you won’t be embarrassed to serve or to give around the holidays:
Bargain White Wine: Farnese Pinot Grigio 2008 (€10.00 per bottle)
Why You’ll Like It: The Farnese is a real show-stopper. Completely unlike some flavourless wines that can be found around the same price elsewhere, this Pinot Grigio is rich, concentrated and adored by all who try it. In 2007, Farnese was crowned Italy’s Winery of the Year for the third year running.
Beautiful White Wine: Dignité Viognier 2007 (€15.00 €12.00 per bottle on sale)
Why You’ll Like It: Viognier (pronounced vee-on-yee-eh) is a tricky grape to grow, but it thrives in the warm climate of the south of France. The Dignité has lovely soft fruit flavours and even a touch of spice – perfect to match with a mild Turkey curry the day after Christmas, or with an array of cheeses. Yum!
Stunning White Wine: Domaine de la Motte Chablis 2007 (€19.00 €15.00 per bottle on sale)
Why You’ll Like It: Chablis is a sub-region within Burgundy, France, and the grape used here is Chardonnay. If you haven’t tried quality Chablis yet, you haven’t given the Chardonnay grape a fair crack of the whip. This is really classy and would make a great complement to a smoked salmon starter on Christmas Day for example.
To make buying holiday wine without a clue easier, we’ve put together a case of Christmas Crackers from our Quick Guide wines to take you from Christmas through New Year’s: Five reds, four whites, and three bottles of bubbly you can proudly pour at your festive table or confidently slip into gift bags for €159.50 on sale with a whopping €40 in savings!
