Buying wine around the holidays is a lot of pressure – loads of us lorry in the drink without a clue what we’re doing, and generally end up picking piles of plonk off the shelf because the label looks quite alright.

Continuing our Quick Guide to Christmas Wines, here’s the straight skinny on three completely classy sparkling wines you won’t be embarrassed to serve or to give around the holidays.

With 25% off all sparkling and Champagne until the New Year, you’d be mad to go anywhere else for your bubbly this Christmas!

Bargain Sparkling Wine: Domenico de Bertiol Prosecco (€12.50 €9.37 per bottle)

Why You’ll Like It: You’ll like it for its gorgeous bottle and enticing price tag, but even better is what’s inside. Made from the Italian grape, Prosecco, this sparkler is dry, fruity and aromatic, and incredibly easy drinking. It’s the perfect aperitif to kick-off a party or even the big day itself.

Beautiful Sparkling Wine: Aureus Cremant de Loire (€18.00 €13.50 per bottle on sale)

Why You’ll Like It: Loire Valley is where to go if you want that ‘Champagne’ quality outside of the Champagne region, and if you want real quality for a celebratory toast this Christmas, the Aureus will push all the right buttons. Voted Best in Class and awarded a silver medal at the International Wine & Spirits Challenge 2009.

Stunning Sparkling Wine: Lallier Premier Cru Rosé Champagne (€37.00 €27.75 per bottle on sale)

Why You’ll Like It: From the world’s most renowned region for sparkling wine, this Rosé Champagne is a super sexy alternative to white bubbly. The Rosé is just a touch more fruity (strawberries and cream, mmm!) than it’s white counterpart so makes the perfect sparkler where you’ve lots of different tastes to cater for. For luxurious drinking this Christmas, look no further.

To make buying holiday wine without a clue easier, we’ve put together a case of Christmas Crackers from our Quick Guide wines to take you from Christmas through New Year’s: Five reds, four whites, and three bottles of bubbly you can proudly pour at your festive table or confidently slip into gift bags for €159.50 on sale with a whopping €40 in savings!

Quick Guide: White Wines for Christmas

Buying wine around the holidays is a lot of pressure – loads of us lorry in the drink without a clue what we’re doing, and generally end up picking piles of plonk off the shelf because the label looks quite alright.

Continuing our Quick Guide to Christmas Wines, here’s the straight skinny on three completely classy white wines you won’t be embarrassed to serve or to give around the holidays:

Bargain White Wine: Farnese Pinot Grigio 2008 (€10.00 per bottle)

Why You’ll Like It: The Farnese is a real show-stopper. Completely unlike some flavourless wines that can be found around the same price elsewhere, this Pinot Grigio is rich, concentrated and adored by all who try it. In 2007, Farnese was crowned Italy’s Winery of the Year for the third year running.

Beautiful White Wine: Dignité Viognier 2007 (€15.00 €12.00 per bottle on sale)

Why You’ll Like It: Viognier (pronounced vee-on-yee-eh) is a tricky grape to grow, but it thrives in the warm climate of the south of France. The Dignité has lovely soft fruit flavours and even a touch of spice – perfect to match with a mild Turkey curry the day after Christmas, or with an array of cheeses. Yum!

Stunning White Wine: Domaine de la Motte Chablis 2007 (€19.00 €15.00 per bottle on sale)

Why You’ll Like It: Chablis is a sub-region within Burgundy, France, and the grape used here is Chardonnay. If you haven’t tried quality Chablis yet, you haven’t given the Chardonnay grape a fair crack of the whip. This is really classy and would make a great complement to a smoked salmon starter on Christmas Day for example.

Quick Guide: Red Wines for Christmas

Buying wine around the holidays is a lot of pressure – loads of us lorry in the drink without a clue what we’re doing, and generally end up picking piles of plonk off the shelf because the label looks quite alright. Since Santa will stick you straight on his Naughty list for buying anything labelled Hardy’s or Blue Nun, this is sadly not a good way to buy wine.

Here’s the straight skinny on three completely classy red wines you won’t be embarrassed to serve or to give around the holidays:

Bargain Red Wine: Sierra Grande Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 (€9.00 per bottle)

Why You’ll Like It: Brimming with ‘yummy’ black fruit, the Sierra Grande Cabernet is sensationally good drinking at 9 quid. This is the sort of wine you open on a cold winter’s night in front of a roaring fire.

Beautiful Red Wine: Greenhough Nelson Pinot Noir 2006 (€20.00 €15.00 per bottle on sale)

Why You’ll Like It: We consider the Greenhough the perfect Christmas dinner wine. This food friendly New Zealander would be on the lighter side of the scale, with generous flavours of vibrant red fruit that will just burst out with turkey.

Stunning Red Wine: Chante Cigale Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2006 (€25.00 €20.00 per bottle on sale)

Why You’ll Like It: Wow! This is our special occasion wine. You may know Chateauneuf du Pape as a phrase of surprise for Del-Boy Trotter, but traditionally this region of France is renowned for it’s exceptionally luxurious red wines made from a blend of different grapes.
