October Case of the Month: Top Selling Wines of 2012

More From: Curious Wines
Posted October 3rd, 2012 by Curious Wines | No Comments

October’s Case of the Month celebrates our top selling wines of 2012. This newly revised list ranks our top selling wines by retail sales for January to September. This is your chance to try the top 12 wines in one special mixed case.

This 12-bottle mixed case contains our six top selling reds and six top selling whites.

The reds:

1    Moulin de Gassac Classic Rouge 2010  Our customers’ favourite red wine. This classic Rhône blend of Syrah and Grenache just hits the sweet spot of a great everyday red: fruit forward, juicy and ripe but with a dry, grippy backbone that makes it great with food or on it’s own. RRP €8.99.

2    Santa Alicia Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2010  A consistent customer favourite for four years now, we maintain Santa Alicia’s Reservas are the best value Chileans in Ireland. The Cabernet is thick, rich and brooding, with the 2010 receiving a whopping 91 points from Wine & Spirits Magazine. RRP €9.99.

3    Dignite Syrah 2009  Our go-to wine for customers looking for an inexpensive weekend treat, the Dignité has gained a bit of a cult following since the first vintage in 2005. Superb depth and richness from 40+ year old vines, let this iron fist breath for a couple of hours to reveal it’s full and wonderful complexity. RRP €12.99.

4    Pago de Cirsus Oak Aged 2010  We bought a bin-end of the 2005 of this wine and it sold out really quickly at the start of the year, prompting us to contact the winery to try the newer vintages. The 2010 was an immediate hit, displacing many cheaper wines to become our top-selling Spanish wine of 2012. RRP €10.99.

5    Cuvée Jean Paul Rouge 2010  If we have a ‘house wine’ it remains the Cuvée Jean-Paul. Like the Gassac Classic, a Syrah-Grenache blend, but softer and juicier and ever-so adaptable.  RRP €7.99.

6    La Mano Mencia Roble 2009  Perhaps this was a bit of novelty when we introduced it at the end of 2010, becoming our top-selling red of 2011. Disregard it’s relative fall, it’s still an absolute treat: earthy, smoky, savoury, bursting with dark fruits like mulberry and blueberry, and knock-out bang for buck. RRP €8.99.

The whites:

1    The Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2011  Still our top selling wine overall, the Ned has ceased to amaze us in it’s almost universal wow factor. In a category that should be becoming tired and old-hat, Brent Marris’s flagship has reset the benchmark for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. RRP €12.99.

2    Mirabello Pinot Grigio 2011  Another wine with universal appeal, what it lacks in wow factor more than makes up for in consistent pleasure and ease of drinking. Think Rocha pear and a finish as clean as the Italian alps air. RRP €8.49.

3    Borgo Magredo Prosecco Frizzante  The new black, if Stella McCartney designed wine it’d be a Prosecco. The Borgo’s a real charmer: soft, ripe and fruity with medium fizz, but with an underlying richness and complexity that demands a second glass (or bottle, depending on your mood or company). RRP €11.99.

4    Cuvée Jean Paul Blanc Sec 2011  Once our top selling wine but only falling behind on the fashionista status of the above. This is still stupendously good, a crisp, aromatic blend from Gascony that punches way above it’s low price. RRP €7.99.

5    Moulin de Gassac Classic Blanc 2010  Gaining a bigger and bigger following for it’s extra complexity and depth to the Cuvée Jean-Paul, this is less a crowd-pleaser but more what we’d call a ‘wine drinker’s wine’, revealing it’s complexity more and more with each sip. RRP €8.99.

6    Santa Alicia Sauvignon Blanc 2012  Cheap Chilean Sauvi is easy to find, good varietal character at this price less so. Snappy grapefruit, sweet melon and tart gooseberry make for a clean, flavoursome wine that appeals to any and every palate. RRP €8.49.

Normal price combined for these 12 great wines is €118.88 but we’ve a Case of the Month price of only €105 during October, with free delivery to your door.

Also available is our Top 10 reds case and Top 10 whites case, both with similar discounts. Click here to see all October’s special cases.

Posted May 4th, 2011 by Curious Wines | No Comments

Our May Case of the Month is a classic case of Old World meets New, with 6 of our favourites from Chile and a selection of 6 blends from the ‘Lafite of the Languedoc’ in southern France.

From Chile, we’ve four of our most popular of the Reserva range from the highly decorated Santa Alicia winery, along with two classy selections from the more northern Tabali. And from Mas de Daumaus Gassac, three levels of wines from the winery described as ‘the Lafite Rothschild of the Languedoc-Roussillon’ by French authority Gault-Millau.

The May Case of the Month contains 6 reds and 6 whites, but we’ve all red and all white selections also available if either are your preferred thing.

Normal price combined for these 12 bottles is €138.88, but they’re yours for just €110 or €9.17 per bottle including delivery for the month of May.

April Case of the Month: Easter cheer

More From: Curious Wines
Posted April 4th, 2011 by Curious Wines | No Comments

Spring is finally upon us, and we’re bringing some of that Easter cheer directly to your door with our April mixed case, showcasing the best value offerings from this months specials.

From France:

The perfect partners for Easter Sunday (if they last that long), the fresh and elegant La Colombe Chablis is a creamy, concentrated unoaked Chardonnay showing a hint of flinty minerality, and our light, red berry fruited La Reine de l’Arenite Fleurie, made from Gamay, is a fabulous wine for the new season and a great addition to the dinner table.

From Italy:

The unwooded, lean style of the Poggiobello Chardonnay shows the kind of wines this epic variety can produce, but Fruili isn’t only famous for its white. The Refosco will delight curious wine drinkers all over.

From Australia:

The third featured Chardonnay is the Spring Seed Four O’Clock Chardonnay from the Bosworth family’s organically grown vineyards in McLaren Vale. Also from there, the rich and intense Scarlett Runner Shiraz.

And from Spain:

Back to Spain, our country of the month. A pairing from highly acclaimed Catalunya winery, Castell del Remei. The rustic Castell del Remei Gotim Bru, packed with herby aromas and flavours of baked red berry, and the fresh, full-bodied Blanc Planell, a blend of Macabeo and the sure-fire Sauvignon Blanc.

Add to the mix the premium Godello dominated Pazo de Monterrey, and three red newbies from Cariñena – a pig, La Granja 360 Tempranillo, a hen, La Granja 360 Syrah, and a zebra, La Granja 360 Tempranillo Garnacha. No bunny rabbit unfortunately. Maybe next Easter.

As ever, our Case of the Month is our best value mixed case. We’ve chopped over €26.88 off the 12 bottles, that’s just €124 delivered.

March Case of the Month

More From: Curious Wines
Posted March 2nd, 2011 by Michael Kane | No Comments

March’s Case of the Month showcases the best of this month’s special offers and new additions to the Curious range, including new wines from Rioja, Côtes du Rhône and Touraine, and a basketful of big scores from Robert Parker.

From Spain, we’re introducing family-run Rioja house Bodegas Vallobera, with two of their wines, the 88-point 2007 Crianza, and the Pago Malarina, a contrasting style semi-crianza where the fruit’s the star.

Also from Spain, we’ve two absolute gems that we just know are going to be huge repeat buys. From Bierzo, La Mano, a lightly oaked red from the Mencía grape with a whopping 89 points from Jay Miller. And from Cariñena, über-chic labels matched by gloriously silky wines, we’ve picked out the ‘Zebra’ Tempranillo/Garnacha as the start of the great value La Granja 360 range.

We’ve three more newbies from France. From Patrick Lesec, another huge price/quality ratio in the 2005 Côtes du Rhône Bouquet with another 89 points from Parker himself. And two new Sauvignons, from Touraine, the exquisitely made Les 2 Pentes, and another great value find from Gascony, the zippy and expressive Grandiose.

Making up the mix, we’ve new vintages from Abadal (2008 red and white blends) from Pla de Bages in Spain, Paarl Heights (2010 Chenin Blanc and Shiraz) from South Africa and to finish off, a second, richer Côtes du Rhône, the Cuvee Richette from Patrick Lesec (and another 87 points from you-know-who).

As ever, our Case of the Month is our best value mixed case. We’ve chopped over €24 off the 12 bottles, so you’ve all this for under €9 a bottle, just €106 delivered.
